Enterprise space for young people in Rainham
Royals Youth Centre
Designed while Frederik was collaborating with Civic Architects, this project is the result of in-depth consultation with multiple user groups at the existing youth centre. Due to the low offer of space for young persons Rainham ROYALS, a local youth charity, teamed up with Havering Council to secure funding for a rooftop extension for an additional space.
As simply adding a “loft extension” would not have given the young persons’ work the exposure and connectivity it deserved, the idea of a projecting box came up as a means of giving the users views out over the town, as well as being visible themselves.
The context of the site ranges from a listed church at the edge of a conservation area to a large scale supermarket and car park, and onwards to the Essex marshes. The heritage officer welcomed the purposeful architecture as an active addition to this fragmented area.
